Description

I can honestly say there is no better or more comforting smell in the world to me than bonfire smoke, good BBQ, and gunpowder (second only perhaps to horsey smells). And that’s exactly what the 4th of July smells like! The fireworks are pretty deafening outside, but kitty’s taking it surprisingly well. Good for him. Take care of your animals, my fellow patriots :o

Anyway, Todd’s been a character that’s been sitting around for a LOONG TIME – even before Lt. Kent (I’m kind of going through my unfinished sketches to build up my courage for some trades I have to finish)! She was originally a dopey young “he,” but then that personality kind of got transferred to Kent, so Todd went on the back burner to wait. Then AC3 came along and TOTALLY reinvigorated my love for colonial history, but I still couldn’t figure him out. Then after re-watching Liberty’s Kids (omg remember that show? WASN’T IT JUST THE GREATEST THING) I was like, “WHAT THE… TODD’S A SHE!?!?” so that was that. Then today was the perfect day to finally solidify her as a character, amidst (probably illegal) explosives and watching Mel Gibson in The Patriot. HURRAY AMERICA :dummy: Oh god, I think I ate too much… :faint:

Carter? Hmmmm… that name sounds familiar… OH WAIT IT IS. She was born Amy Carter, named after her mother by her uncle, Travis Carter – a self-proclaimed “Pirate”, but she has a hard time believing that. Her mother had married wealthy in Massachusetts, thus she came from a well-off family. When rumblings of unrest with England began, her family was prominently Loyalist (much to her mother and uncle’s chagrin – this led to many dinner table arguments). She didn’t really make politics much of her business, besides what opinions of her father she could regurgitate. She would much rather play in the stables with (who would’ve guessed so cliché) the stable boy, Gill, whom she’d known for as long as she could remember. But when war broke out years later, Gill marched off with the local militia to fight the Regulars, leaving Amy alone to the dreary noble-woman’s life of growing up. She worried about him constantly, and eagerly awaited every letter he sent – until the day the letters stopped, and she didn’t know why.

She fell into a dreadful depression, a sadness she couldn’t divulge to her parents as her father was already furious that the hired help had gone off with the rebels. In the meantime, she was constantly courted by what her father considered “worthy lads,” and in particular a handsome but pompous British officer. She never particularly liked him, but a combination of an offensive remark made by him and her growing anxiety about the lack of correspondence from her best friend sent her over the edge. The Siege of Boston a year prior had shown that the Continental Army was fairly capable when it came to holding their own, and she fancied what a battlefield was like.

There was continuous unrest regarding the community’s sentiments toward her suspected Loyalist family as Patriotism surged through the colonies. No longer able to bear her father’s political views and offensive conversation (during this time, she had made politics something she was very involved in), she ran away dressed in what clothes Gill had left behind. It was a tough act to bind herself, but with the right clothing she looked more boy than woman. Taking on the name "Todd" - after the family's favorite dog - she took to the uniform and bayonet quickly. Her quest to find her friend and prove her father wrong drove her to enlist in the Continental Army. Here she found out that the real battlefield is nothing like it is written about in poems.
