Dear Ma,

I know you probably will never get this letter (along with all the others I sent during the war because my sarge was loony), but the doc says I should keep writing as though you will. Silly, in my opinion, but there’s nothing else to do around here. At the moment I’m hiding in the closet under the stairs; Miss Saunders has been ragging on me at every turn to read this thing called ‘The Face Book’ and if I don’t really care for books or people’s faces to begin with, why would I want to read that? She’s relentless, so I have found this dingy closet to be my only safe haven… to be honest, it reminds me of the trenches.

Tomorrow’s a big day for Dolly: she’s going to her first horse show. You should see her, ma, she’s a natural with them. She told me she grew up on a farm, that’s why. You wouldn’t believe it if you saw it, but she’s riding a flying horse named Canary – an ill-tempered piece of horse meat if you ask me, but they seem to get along fine. Not that I know much about the animals, apart from those ponies from that carnival when I was six.

Anyway, I decided to give her my flight suit. It’s not like I’ll be able to use it again, judging from the outcome of my last flight and obviously none of her dresses were suitable. Oh, you and Dolly would get along just fine, Ma. The suit was pretty big on her, but she sewed it up just as good as you could. And believe it or not, when I tried to help she shooed me out just like you used to. She didn’t want to take my flying cap, saying she didn’t want to muss her curls with it, but I think she just didn’t want to take it away from me. She doesn’t say it, but she feels sorry for me. She thinks that with patience, she can help me get over these nervous breakdowns that won’t let me fly, or ride, or drive or… well, do anything. I appreciate the effort, but I don’t have the heart to tell her I’m a lost cause. She’ll give up sooner or later. Knowing her, probably later.

Now I know what you’re thinking… “Don’t sit under the apple tree…” Well, I’m not, I assure you. Dolly and I are nothing more than friends, and I use that term loosely. Sometimes I’m not quite sure… she’s just so darn full of herself I just don’t know. Now I can hear you scolding me for that, but I’m just telling the truth. She’s nice enough, and she has a kind heart, and yes ma, she’s pretty. She’s very pretty. What I’m getting at is Maybel is still my girl and I’ll come home. Soon, they say. But, to be honest Ma… I’m not so sure I am coming home soon. 

This war might be a little longer than we thought.

Wish Dolly the best of luck – with the way that stallion behaves she’s going to need it.
